As you may know, the famous Ringling Bros. & Barnum and Bailey Circus is no more. The institution folded its tents this year, citing shrinking audiences, travel costs – well, there were a lot of extenuating factors involved.
In the Damage Prevention world, the big show is the 4th Annual Eagle Ford Safety & Equipment Rodeo Roundup that went on in Pearsall, Texas this past Friday!
This mega-event, brought to life through the efforts of Doug Meeks, Damage Prevention Manager with the Damage Prevention Councils of Texas South Texas chapter, Texas811, Williams, Enertech and many, many others had so many events going that it needed a ringmaster!
Pearsall is in South Texas, about 100 miles from Laredo. Its population of 10,000 grew by about 500 on Friday when the gates opened for the big event.
Headlining the show was a Mock Line Strike conducted by Enertech, where attendees got to experience a mock gas pipeline rupture showing what happens when a gas delivery line is struck by mechanized digging equipment, and what steps need to be taken in the immediate aftermath.
But as they say on TV, wait, there’s more!
Area firefighters donned their gear and competed in the First-In Firefighter Challenge. These men and women from across South Texas competed in a grueling physical fitness challenge that included a tower climb, among other things.
Peace officers presented a virtual Shoot/Don’t Shoot simulation where you find out what goes through a cop’s mind when faced with a potential bad guy with a gun. Officers also played through a scenario in which a routine traffic stop turns into a deadly shooting, with both the officer and the assailant down.
Other events included a backhoe rodeo and high-voltage electrical safety demonstration, as well as plenty of food from numerous cooks and booths with something for everyone.
An event like this takes a year to put together, and over 30 sponsors who gave generously of their time and funding.
If you missed this event, it will be back next year at about this same time – and if you still haven’t attended a Mock Line Strike/PipelineResponse event in Texas, we have one coming up in Lubbock on Friday, October 20 and another in the Vinton/El Paso area on Friday, October 27.

We hope to see you at one!
Until next time, safe digging!
