Did you know that according to the Common Ground Alliance (CGA), a buried utility is struck every nine minutes in the nation? How does that happen?
Well – according to the CGA, about one hundred yards of buried utility exist for each man, woman and child in the United States.
BUT: making the locate request to 811 before digging can reduce the risk of an incident to less than one percent!!!
That’s what your Damage Prevention Councils of Texas (DPCs) are all about. We are here to promote the use of 811 in safe digging. The locate request to 811 is always free, as is the subsequent locating of buried utilities. And by the way, it’s the law in Texas.
Our job for you – always free – is to promote an exchange of ideas and information between stakeholders, excavators, contractors, homeowners – anyone who puts a shovel into the ground in Texas. To do this, we employ several tools.
The first is simply the DPC meeting. There are DPC meetings held across the state, in every DPC geographic area. For more on the meetings in your area, go here.
Another BIG tool is the Mock Line Strike. If you are in the Fort Stockton area, come on out on June 7 and attend our Mock Line Strike/PipelineResponse event.
We’ve mentioned it before but the full list of Mock Line Strike events is here.
At your DPCs of Texas, we put it all together for you. Why you should call 811. When you should call 811. What to expect when you call 811. Why the 811 system exists.
We’ll also answer any of your questions about Texas811 and the 811 system.
Safe digging, calling 811 before you dig, having underground utilities located, the role of the underground utility locator and YOUR role in 811 all come together at your Damage Prevention Councils of Texas.
Take the time and make the trip. Enjoy a free lunch. You might even win a door prize.
We guarantee you’ll enjoy the meeting, and you’ll come away with a fresh perspective on keeping Texas’ underground infrastructure safe.
Until next week, safe digging!
