The Fourth of July is behind us – and we’re now headlong into the last half of 2018.
That means you’ve still got over 20 more chances to attend a Mock Line Strike/PipelineResponse event in Texas. The next Mock Line Strike is in Georgetown later this week, on July 12th. The schedule is here, including the rest of the year.
We’ve talked about the Mock Line Strikes before, but really, if you’ve never attended one, you’re missing out. Where else will you get to watch what happens when an excavator pierces a gas line? Our “line”, of course, is a fake – pressurized with air from a compressor and loaded with lime field marking powder or something similar to give you something to see when the line ruptures.
Pretty spectacular, right? Add in a man down, and a rescue by local first responders, and you have the closest you can get to the real thing. It’s a forceful teaching tool because seeing is believing.
The whole purpose of these events is safety instruction, and of course instruction on the proper and necessary use of the 811 system in Texas. Everyone in the field has their job to do, and the primary job of your Damage Prevention Managers is to make sure everyone goes home safe at the end of the day.
That means ALWAYS using 811 to get underground facilities located prior to any excavation. The 811 service is free, and so is the subsequent locate. In Texas, you’re required by law to contact 811 if digging 16” or deeper – but really, get in touch with Texas811 anytime you’re going to be breaking ground, no matter for what purpose.
Are you needing more information on 811 and excavating in Texas? Attend one of our Damage Prevention Council meetings.
The list of upcoming meets is here.
Until next week, safe digging!
